Google 2-Step Verification (2SV) adds a second layer of protection to your Hamilton Google account. After you enter your password, you'll confirm your identity with a phone prompt, verification code, security key, or passkey before you can sign in. This article walks you through enrolling your Hamilton account in 2SV.
Enroll a backup verification method (such as a phone number or backup codes) in addition to your primary method. If you lose access to your only verification method, you will be locked out of your account and will need to contact the Help Desk to regain access.
Instructions
- Go to myaccount.google.com/signinoptions/two-step-verification and sign in with your Hamilton Google account, if you're not already signed in.
- Select Turn on 2-Step Verification.
- Choose at least one verification method and follow the on-screen steps to complete enrollment. For method-specific instructions, see Google's guide for each:
- Google Prompt: a sign-in approval sent to your phone (recommended by LITS). On an iPhone, you'll need the Gmail, Google Photos, YouTube, or Google app installed and signed in with your Hamilton account.
- Google Authenticator: a time-based code generated by an app on your phone. Other authenticator apps, such as Microsoft Authenticator or Duo Mobile, work the same way.
- Phone Number: a text message or phone call with a verification code
- Passkeys and Security Keys: verify with your fingerprint, face, or device PIN using a passkey, or with a small physical security key you plug in or tap. If you use a passkey, Google may still ask for your password first, depending on your account settings.
- Backup Codes: one-time codes to use if your other methods are unavailable
- Once enrollment is complete, confirm that 2-Step Verification shows as On.
Enroll well before your deadline. Google may take up to 7 days before a newly added phone number, security key, or passkey can be used to sign in.
You can enroll more than one verification method. Enrolling two gives you a fallback if you misplace your phone or lose signal.
If you don't have a phone or other device that can use these methods, the Help Desk has a limited number of security keys available. Submit a request to ask about one.
