Google 2-Step Verification (2SV) adds a second layer of protection to your Hamilton Google account. After you enter your password, you'll confirm your identity with a phone prompt, verification code, or security key before you can sign in. This article walks you through turning 2SV on for your Hamilton account.
Set up a backup verification method (such as a phone number) in addition to your primary method. If you lose access to your only verification method, you will be locked out of your account and will need to contact the Help Desk to regain access.
Instructions
- Go to myaccount.google.com/security and sign in with your Hamilton Google account, if you're not already signed in.
- On the Security page, find the "How you sign in to Google" section and select 2-Step Verification.
- Select Get Started and re-enter your password to confirm it's you.
- Choose a verification method and follow the on-screen prompts to complete setup. Common options include:
- Google Prompt – a sign-in approval sent to your phone (recommended if you use the Gmail app)
- Phone number – a text message or phone call with a verification code
- Authenticator app – a time-based code generated by an app such as Google Authenticator
- Once setup is complete, confirm that 2-Step Verification shows as On on the Security page.
You can add more than one verification method. Setting up two gives you a fallback if you misplace your phone or lose signal.
Using Outlook or other third-party email apps
If you use Outlook or another email client that does not support OAuth sign-in, 2-Step Verification requires a separate App Password instead of your regular password. See Google's instructions for signing in with App Passwords.
