Connecting a Device to the Hamilton IoT Network

Tags IOT network

Some devices can only connect to a wireless network using a pre-shared key, also known as a "PSK" or "password." This method works for home Wi-Fi networks that only ask for a password, but it won't work for larger networks like aps-hamilton, which requires a Hamilton account to log in. However, devices needing a pre-shared key can connect to the Hamilton IoT network by following the instructions in this article.

 Prerequisites

Before attempting to registering a device:

  1. Check the list of known issues and ensure your device will work.

  2. Verify that the device can see Hamilton IoT when it scans for available networks.

  3. Ensure the MAC address of the device is known.

  4. Ensure that the option to use a randomized MAC address is disabled, if applicable.

 Student Devices

Please note the following information and restrictions regarding student-owned devices:

  • Each student may register up to 5 devices for use on the Hamilton IoT network.

  • Pre-shared keys issued for student devices are valid for a maximum of 1 year.

  • Registrations will be purged every summer, so devices will need to be re-registered at the start of each academic year.

Registering a New Device

If you're a student, follow the steps below to register a personally-owned device for use on the Hamilton IoT network.

  1. Log in to the Student IoT Device Portal with your Hamilton username and password.

  2. In the Access Details section, click on the Access Type drop-down and select Student Devices.

  4. Click Submit.

  5. The next screen will show the pre-shared key for the device, and you will also receive a confirmation email which includes this information. The PSK can then be used to join your device to the Hamilton IoT network.
