  1. Check Course Settings
  • Click the settings gear (top right) to open course settings.

  • The option to keep the course closed or open is found here.

    • Closed: Students cannot access the course. This is useful while you are still building or updating materials.

    • Open: Students can access the course. Enable this when the course is ready for the start of classes.

  • Additional options such as message settings and progress tracking are also available here.

  1. Course Structure
  • Course Content page: This is your main workspace. A template with learning modules (containers) will be available in your Ultra course.

  • You are free to use the template as provided, edit the existing modules, or replace them with new folders based on your preferred course organization.

edit existing folders screenshot

  • Use clear, consistent titles so students can easily navigate the content.

  • New folders/ learning modules can be created at the location where you wish to insert content by selecting the + icon > Create.

plus icon screenshot

  • Both folders and learning modules are containers used to organize course content in Ultra. The difference is in how they display and what extra features they offer.

    • Learning modules

      • Supports thumbnail images for visual identification.

      • When you open a Learning Module, a collapsible table of contents appears in the side panel. This panel displays all items within the module, allowing you and your students to quickly see and navigate the full sequence of content..

      • Allows forced sequencing - students must progress through items in order.

      • Ideal for weekly units, topics, or step‑by‑step learning paths.

    • Folders

      • Displays items in a basic list without thumbnails.

      • Does not offer forced sequencing or a table of contents.

      • Useful for general storage, resource collections, or non‑sequential materials.

      • Blackboard Ultra does not allow nesting folders beyond the second level, so deeper multi‑level folder structures are not supported.

  1. Upload your syllabus and key documents
  • Upload slides, readings, and other materials into the right folder/module by selecting + icon > Upload

upload icon

  • Ensure your file is added to the correct container by clicking and expanding the folder or learning module first. Then select the plus icon within that container to upload your content.

  1. Additional learning content
  • Documents: Use Documents to combine text, files, and media in one place. Navigate to the required folder and select the + icon > Create > Document.

  1. Communication Tools - Ultra provides two communication tools for reaching users enrolled in your course:
  • Announcements: Sent to the entire course roster by default. Ideal for broad updates, reminders, and important notices.

  • Messages: More flexible. You can send messages to the entire roster, individual students, faculty, or specific groups.

  1. Review Accessibilty settings
  • Readable documents: Use clear headings and simple formatting in Word/PDF. Content created using Ultra Documents includes an accessibility checker, which helps you identify and correct issues to ensure your materials are accessible to all students.

  • Captions: Ensure videos have captions or transcripts.

  • Alt text: Add alt text for applicable images.

  1. Preview the course as a student
  • Student Preview: Use Student Preview to see the course from a student’s perspective.

  • Check visibility: Confirm students can see what they need (and not see what they shouldn’t).

  • Test a submission: Try submitting a test assignment to check the workflow.
