Installing or Upgrading Onbase Client

This article explains how to uninstall previous versions of the OnBase Unity Client and Virtual Print Driver, and install the current version (25.1). OnBase is used by several departments on campus. Versions 22 and lower are no longer compatible with the current implementation and must be removed before upgrading.

If you have OnBase version 22 or lower installed, you must fully uninstall it before installing version 25.1. Do not attempt to install the new version over an existing installation.

Uninstalling Previous Versions of Unity Client

  1. Open Control Panel >> Programs and Features.
  2. Uninstall the following Hyland programs. Uninstall may take a while for each application:
    • Hyland OnBase Virtual Print Driver
    • Hyland Unity Client(s) – there may be more than one instance installed (for example, a Test and a Production client). Uninstall all Hyland programs listed.
  3. After uninstalling, navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Hyland\ on the local machine.
  4. If a Unity Client folder still exists in that location, delete the folder. If a previous version was installed to a non-default location, check there as well.

The Hyland folder must be deleted before proceeding with installation of the new version. Leftover files in this folder can cause the new install to fail or behave unexpectedly.

 Downloading the Installation Files

  1. Navigate to the following network drive: \\ess\applications\OnBase
  2. Save both the OnBase-25.1-UnityClient and OnBase-vpd64 folders to the local desktop. Installing from the local desktop is significantly faster than running the installers directly from the network share.

You must be on campus or connected to the VPN to access this network drive.

 Installing the Unity Client

  1. In the OnBase-25.1-UnityClient folder saved to the desktop, run the setup application.
  2. Allow the application to make changes to the computer when prompted.
  3. On the Setup Wizard welcome screen, select Next.
  4. On the Destination Folder screen, leave the install location at its default and select Next.
  5. On the Custom Setup screen:
    • Leave Unity Client set to its default (enabled).
    • Enable the Virtual Print Driver Listener: click the dropdown next to Virtual Print Driver Listener and select Entire feature will be installed on local hard drive.
    • Select Next once the Virtual Print Driver Listener is set to install.

  6. On the Service Location screen, enter the following:
    • Display Name: Production
    • Service Path: https://obweb-prod26.hamilton.edu/AppServer64/service.asmx
    • Data Source: OnBase
    • Use NT/LDAP Authentication: Yes
    Select Next.
  7. On the Additional Settings screen, leave the Default Mail Client at Microsoft Outlook, or change it to Gmail if preferred, then select Next.
  8. On the Service Mode Options screen, leave Prevent Client from launching on system startup unchecked, then select Next.
  9. On the Unity Configuration File Location screen, leave the box unchecked, then select Next.
  10. On the Ready to Install screen, leave Create Desktop shortcut(s) when applicable checked if a desktop shortcut is wanted, then select Install.
  11. Select Finish once the install completes.

Leave the Service Mode Options box unchecked. If this option is checked, the Virtual Print Driver may not work.

 Installing the Virtual Print Driver

  1. Open the OnBase-vpd64 folder saved to the desktop.
  2. Run the setup application.
  3. On the Setup Wizard welcome screen, select Next.
  4. On the Installation Options screen, leave the Spool Directory and Environment settings at their defaults (Auto-Detect recommended), then select Next.
  5. Select Install.
  6. Select Finish once the install completes.

 Post-Installation

Restart the computer after installation. On first restart, a security popup for "Hyland Unity Client [OnBase]" may appear asking to install an application from a specific domain.

If the domain listed in the popup is obweb-prod.hamilton.edu (without the "26"), this is the old version prompting for install. Select Don’t Install.
