Viewing Backups and Restoring Files in CrashPlan

This article describes the steps to restore files through the Crashplan application or over the web client

CrashPlan is a backup service that Hamilton College has adopted and provided to all college faculty and employees in order to be able to easily and securely back up your desktop or notebook office computer. This article explains how to view and restore files onto one's computer using the CrashPlan client or website.

 Instructions

Restoring Files Using the Crashplan Client

  1. Open the CrashPlan client by clicking on the CrashPlan icon in your system tray (Windows), or in the upper-right status bar (Mac).

  2. Click Restore Files. A drop-down will display all the barcoded machines that were/are backing up your files through CrashPlan.

  3. Select the barcoded machine that you would like to restore files from. All of your associated folders on that machine will be listed alongside their last modified date

  4. You can check mark entire folders that you would like to restore or click into a specific folder to restore individual files.

  5. Once you have selected the folders or files you wish to restore, click Restore files on the bottom right.

  6. A pop up will be displayed, requesting you select where you would like these restored files to be placed, what to do in the case of a duplicate file and the current permissions applied to the restored files. Once selected, click Go.

  7. The restore will begin. On the top left you will see the restore in process in Downloads, indicating how much time it will take to complete this restore.

Restoring Files Using the Crashplan Website

  1. On your browser go to the Crashplan Console.

  2. Type in your full Hamilton email address. You will then be prompted for your username and password.

  3.  Once logged in you will be given options for App Downloads and Device management. Click Devices from the left-hand panel which lists all devices that are performing backups.

  4. Select one of the devices you would like to restore files from and click the Restore icon.

  5. A web restore menu will appear with options similar to the webclient restore options listed above.

  6. Check mark the entire folders that you would like to restore, or click into a specific folder to restore individual files. Click restore.

  7. The restore will begin, indicated on the bottom left. Files restored via the web are downloaded in a .zip format.

 CrashPlan restores must be done over the network. If you begin a restore but are moving locations, you can pause the restore until you return to a more reliable network connection.
