The Academic Server (AS) provides shared storage for coursework and research data that faculty and students use for a class, research project, or other academic pursuit. This article explains how to connect to the Academic Server from a Mac or a Windows PC.
Academic Server Folder Types
- Individual student folder – Students have full access to their own folder.
- Shared folder – Enrolled students have full read-write-execute access.
- Data folder – Enrolled students can read and execute.
- DropBox folder – Enrolled students can write only.
Accessing Files on a Mac
- From the main menu bar, select Go > Connect to Server.

- In the Connect to Server window, type academic in the Server Address field, then click Connect.

- If prompted, log in to the Hamilton College network using your username and password.

- Use the following syntax for your username:
- Faculty/Employees: username@hamilton.edu
- Students: username@students.hamilton.edu
- Use the same password you use for MyHamilton or HillConnect email, then click Connect.
- Select the desired folder and click OK.

Create a desktop alias to your AS folder
This should be done on personal computers only. Never create a desktop alias to your AS folder on a public lab machine.
- Add your AS folder to the Finder sidebar by locating your folder and dragging it into the sidebar. Once added, click the folder in the sidebar to access it at any time. If you are not connected, you will be prompted for your username and password.
- Two-finger click (or Ctrl-click) on your AS folder — the folder named with your username — and select Make Alias. A new folder named "username alias" will appear. Drag this alias to your Desktop. Double-click the alias any time to access your AS folder; you will be prompted for your credentials if not already connected.
- Alternatively, click once on your AS folder to highlight it, then hold Command and Option while you click and drag the folder to your desktop. Release the mouse button on the desktop, then release the Command and Option keys. The resulting alias will show a small curved arrow in its lower-left corner. Double-click it to access your AS folder.
Accessing Files on a Windows PC
- Double-click the Computer icon on the desktop, then double-click the (K:) drive icon.
- Alternatively, from the Start Menu, type \\academic and press Enter.

- Double-click the desired folder to open it.

Create a desktop shortcut to your AS folder
This should be done on personal computers only. Never create a desktop shortcut to your AS folder on a public lab machine.
- Right-click your AS folder, hold down the mouse button, and drag it to your desktop.
- Release the right mouse button. When the menu appears, select Create shortcuts here.
- Click the shortcut any time to access your AS folder. If you are not connected, you will be prompted for your username and password.
