If you're traveling internationally or studying abroad for a semester, Duo authentication can still work even without cellular service or a wifi connection. Several options are available depending on what devices you have with you.
Standard Duo Methods (Cellular or Wifi Available)
If you have cellular service or a wifi connection while abroad, you can use whatever Duo authentication method you normally use. Duo Push and phone call options both work internationally. You can also add an international phone number as an authentication option before you leave.
Duo Hardware Token (No Smartphone/Tablet)
If you don't have a smartphone or tablet, a Duo hardware token is an option for authenticating without a data connection.
- Contact the Help Desk to request a hardware token.
- When prompted for Duo authentication, select the "Enter a Passcode" option.
- Enter the passcode displayed on the hardware token.
Request a hardware token before you depart, as processing may take a few business days.
Bypass Code (No Smartphone/Tablet, No Hardware Token)
If a hardware token isn't an option, you can request a temporary bypass code for Duo authentication that covers the duration of your trip.
- Contact the Help Desk to request a bypass code. You will be asked to show photo ID for verification purposes.
- When prompted for Duo authentication, select the "Enter a Passcode" option.
- Enter the bypass code you were given.
A bypass code is time-limited to the trip duration specified when requested. Confirm your return date with the Help Desk so the code covers your full trip.
