Network Shares / Drives Refuse to Mount on while On-Campus

Summary

This article explains how to connect to ESS while on campus for both a Mac and Windows machine.

Body

 Issue

While on campus, a Hamilton-barcoded machine is failing to display one or more network drives that were previously accessible. Anyone attempting to view their network drives while off-campus must be connected to VPN first.

 Resolution

Network drives mount during the computer's start-up process.

On Windows, a group policy determines which drives should be mounted for the logged-in account. If this policy fails to run, the drives will not mount. Restarting the computer should fix the issue. If a user is still unable to view their network drives after restarting their machine, they can remap their network drive.

On a Mac, it may be necessary to mount existing drives again using the steps below:

Accessing ESS On-Campus - Macintosh

  1. From the Macintosh desktop, select Go and then Connect to Server.

  2. Enter "ess" as the server address, then select Connect.

  3. Under Select the volumes to mount, choose Users from the window (or, if applicable, Campus or Departments), then select OK.

  4. Locate the folder you wish to connect to.  As long as you have the appropriate rights, you can now copy files to the desired space.
